Vocabulary:
Predator - an animal that hunts other animals for food. Prey - an animal that is hunted for food. Scavenger - an animal that eats the remains or waste of another animal. (EX: Vulture) They eat the parts that the predators won't eat. Food Chain - shows the path of food energy in an ecosystem. Food Web - Shows how one plant or animal is part of another food chain. |
All living things need energy to stay alive. They get their energy from food. Plants don't eat food because they are producers. They make their own food through the process of photosynthesis. This happens when plants use light energy and carbon dioxide to make food. Thus, energy flows from the Sun, to a producer, and then finally to consumers. At each step of the chain, energy is lost.
